Summer Abroad in Hawai'i |
|
Your summer academic program will take place at Hawaii
Pacific University (HPU), Hawaii’s largest private university.
HPU is a world-class university with a reputation for excellence in
teaching. It has been cited in Barron’s as a “Best Buy”
in college education and has mentions in numerous other “best
of” magazines including Newsweek and Time. What sets HPU apart
from perhaps any other university in the U.S. is the internationalism
of the student body – nearly 25% of its 8,500 students are international
and they come from more than 100 countries. While studying at HPU
you will learn not only from the professors, but also from your fellow
students. |
| |
| Academics |
It
is important to realize that just because HPU is located in a tropical
paradise, it does not mean it is not a “serious” academic
institution. In fact, HPU professors have been recognized nationally
and internationally for the work they do in their field. The best
part for you is that these professors are all very approachable and
are paid to teach, not to research. You will not find any teaching
assistants in the classroom at HPU.
At Hawaii Pacific you will have the option of taking any number of
classes in disciplines ranging from Liberal Arts, Business Administration
and Communication to Natural Sciences, International Studies and Nursing.
As a Study Abroad Hawaii student, you will receive pre-approval for
the subjects that you desire and know that those subjects will be
offered when you arrive. You will register for up to 6 credits per
term and you may combine terms to maximize your credit load. It is
entirely possible to take up to 12 credits by combining sessions.
At the end of your experience will receive an academic transcript
from Hawaii Pacific University.
Transfer Credit
In many cases, students who study abroad want to receive transfer
credit for their experience. If this is your situation, you will need
to complete the "Course Selection Worksheet" in the application
packet and return it with the rest of the application forms. In order
to transfer credit back to your home institution, the courses you
take abroad must meet the same requirements as a similar course offered
at your home school. To determine this transferability, your study
abroad advisor (or academic advisor) will want to see descriptions
of the courses you intend to take – the subjects offered at
HPU and their descriptions can be found below. If you do not want
transfer credit for your experience (keep in mind that you will still
receive an official transcript), you need only to select the subjects
you wish to take. You do not need to worry about the subject equivalents
nor obtaining any signatures. |

Not all subjects listed are available to study abroad students. In
particular, many of the “fieldwork” classes in the marine
and environmental science areas are often not available to students
only staying for a semester. |

| Campus
Life |
Believe
it or not, summer sessions at Hawaii Pacific are popular and there
is still much happening on campus. Many of the clubs and organizations
formed during the academic year continue operating during the summer
sessions as well. You will have a difficult time narrowing down your
choices from the 80+ clubs that range from professional organizations
(i.e., Advertising, Creative Writing, Debate, Press Club, etc.), to
cultural (i.e., Swedish, Thai, Singaporean, Hawaiian, Latino, French,
etc.), to activities (i.e. surfing, canoeing, kite boarding, rugby,
etc.). In addition, there are numerous activities planned by the Student
Life Office. |

| Facilities
and Services |
As a modern university, HPU has all the services and facilities you
would expect. The University has two libraries, one on each campus,
to support the academic programs taught at each. Other academic support
facilities and services include: an Academic Advisement Center; the
Learning Assistance Center (multimedia support); Tutoring Center (providing
personal tutoring for nearly every subject taught); computer labs
and wireless internet connection; multimedia classrooms equipped to
allow you to learn in a state-of-the-art environment; and, communication
facilities specially designed for students studying broadcasting,
multimedia or journalism.
In addition to the academic support facilities, there are a number
of other places that you will want to know about including a student
union, student cafeteria, athletic facilities and fields and a campus
bookstore. |

| Accommodation |
| Study Abroad Hawaii participants all live university-sponsored housing in Waikiki, just blocks from the ocean. The apartment building is a secured environment with 24 hour security, has a pool and barbeque on premise, and is located near to shopping, nightlife and entertainment. All units are furnished and equipped with the “basics” – refrigerator, stove, microwave, etc. The program fee (below) is based upon shared room accommodation. If you would like a private room, we can try and assist you with this request, but, due to the shortage of quality housing on Oahu, we cannot guarantee this. If we are able to find a single room, please note that there will be an additional charge of approximately $1,000.00 per term. |
